Maya Bunik, MD MPH, FAAP is Professor of Pediatrics at University of Colorado School of Medicine, Bonne W. Camp Distinguished Professor in Pediatrics and Associate Chief Medical Officer of Ambulatory at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO). She was part of the HRSA Pirmary Care Research Fellowship in 2003-2006. In her previous 15-year-role as medical director of the primary care teaching clinic at CHCO, she was involved in quality improvement research with screening for pregnancy-related and teen depression, developmental screening/delay and follow-up, secondhand smoke (SHS), asthma management as well as well child care continuity and adherence.
Maya has focused her research on breastfeeding management and support particularly in Latinx parents--created and evaluated a bilingual breastfeeding app "Mother's Milk Messaging". She has also partnered on studies related to cannabinoids in breastmilk. She continues to mentor others on various studies including e-consults, behavioral health screening, breastfeeding curricula and gun violence prevention.
Currently, she leads the breastfeeding management clinic ‘Trifecta Team’ (pediatrician, lactation specialist and psychologist) and has been helping mother-baby pairs for over 25 years. This model includes a multidisciplinary approach to outpatient care.
Dr. Bunik is the current Chair of the AAP Section on Breastfeeding. Her book, Breastfeeding Telephone Triage and Advice published by the AAP, will soon be in its 5th edition and a helpful resource for physician practices and anyone providing breastfeeding advice.
